Teeth whitening

What is it?

Expansion appliances are specialised orthodontic devices
Used to gently widen the upper jaw (also known as the maxilla or palate). This process, called maxillary or palatal expansion, creates more space in the mouth, helping to correct issues such as crowding, crossbites, and breathing difficulties.

Who it’s for:

Expansion appliances, or palatal expanders, are primarily suitable for children and adolescents (typically aged 7 to 14) whose upper jaw (palate) is too narrow relative to their lower jaw, or for those who need more space to alleviate crowding. While most effective in growing children, these devices can also be used for adults, often with surgical assistance.

How the procedure works:

Expansion appliances, or palatal expanders, work by applying gentle, consistent outward pressure to the upper molars, which gradually widens the upper jaw (maxilla). They are designed to correct a narrow upper jaw, fix crossbites, and create space for crowded teeth in children and adolescents. The procedure involves using a small, central screw mechanism to separate the two halves of the upper jawbone, which are not yet fully fused.

Comfort and safety

Orthodontic expansion appliances—often called palatal or maxilla expanders—are specialized devices designed to widen the upper jaw, create space for crowded teeth, and correct crossbites. They are highly effective in growing children and adolescents, though specialized options exist for adults.

Frequently asked questions

How does a palatal expander work?
An expander sits on the roof of the mouth and applies gentle, outward pressure to the two halves of the upper jaw. A central screw is turned periodically (usually by parents or the patient) with a specialized key, which gradually increases the width of the appliance.
